Description
A 3-hour seminar designed to orient Islamic scholars, teachers and students of sacred ‘ilm to an Islamically grounded understanding of mental health and psychological suffering.
Scholars are often the first point of contact for community members in distress, yet the relationship between the Islamic tradition’s understanding of the human being and contemporary mental health care is rarely made explicit. This seminar introduces a framework (Traditional Islamically Integrated Psychotherapy TIIP) rooted in the classical Islamic conception of the human soul — the qalb, nafs, ʿaql, and rūḥ — and demonstrates how it can be integrated with modern clinical psychology to make sense of common psychological and emotional difficulties. An integrated approach of contemporary psychology and the exemplary work of classical scholars on the subject matter will be presented
Participants will be introduced to the distinction between spiritual struggle and psychological disorder, common presentations of mental illness and how they may appear in a religious idiom, the scope and limits of the scholar’s role in responding to distress, and the principles that should guide referral to mental health professionals. The distinction between spiritual issues and mental health issues will be discussed, along with the appropriate route of referral
